The site

Steetley today

The Steetley site, located off the A619 between Whitwell and Worksop, is 85 hectares and falls across the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire border.

Passing by the site you may see areas of green space and some evidence of industrial use, but apart from one remaining business which occupies a small part of the site, the location is derelict and dangerous. It was formerly the Baker Refractory Works, Armstrong Quarry and Steetley Colliery as well as home to several smaller industrial operations.

The site is highly polluted and over the years has been subject to fly-tipping and vandalism and has become a favourite spot for joy riders. Laing O’Rourke is committed to cleaning up the site and you can read about what we have been doing under the ‘Regenerating Steetley’ link on this site.

Alternatively, take a look at our aerial view of the site, taken in August 2008, which provides a little more detail about what we have completed on site and our ongoing activities.

Who owns the site?
The Baker Refractory site is owned by Steetley Investments Ltd and Steetley Investments (Two) Ltd who have agreed to lease the areas of land covered by the current applications to Laing O’Rourke.

Laing O'Rourke and the East Midlands Development Agency (emda) have agreed that emda will contribute £4.65m towards the company's multi-million pound remediation of the site.
